Article Review:
“Intracardiopulmonary
migration of IVC filters”
Leah Ham BA
This article consisted of a systematic review on reports of
intracardiopulmonary migration of IVC filters from Nov 2008 to
June 2024.
Data extracted included the cause of the migration, time of
migration, whether it was a fractured strut that migrated or the
entire filter, and patient outcomes, among other variables.
The researchers concluded that filter fracture was the most
common cause of these migrations; taking into account that the
median time post deployment that migrations occurred was four
years, weakening of the filter likely played a role.
Both prompt removal of temporary filters and innovations in
the materials used to make them should lead to a decrease in
filter fractures.
